Mosquitoes & Methods

Providing mosquito control in one of the most tropical regions in the state of Florida presents a unique challenge for the Florida Keys Mosquito Contorl District (FKMCD). More than 50 different species of mosquito are found in the Keys and the district has developed a highly effective integrated mosquito management over the years to deal with both nuisance and disease spreading varieties of mosquitoes.

FKMCD uses a variety of control techniques and is constantly searching for innovative or novel control techniques that are also in complaince with federal and state regulations.

The FKMCD-Oxitec Mosquito Project is an example of the 'novel' control measures under consideration by the District. The Oxitec programs utilizes a genetically altered male Aedes aegypti mosquito to diminish  populations of that species in certain  areas. The Oxitec product  awaits approval by the Federal Government for further use.

The Florida Keys Mosquito Control Distirct occassionally utilizes  customized drones to treat smaller parcels that are difficult to reach on foot, but too small  or confined for helicopter.

FKMCD uses field inspectors as a front line of defense against mosquitoes. If you place a service request an inspector can be dispatched to your property quickly.
